The Happy Factor 2018 – Why Some People are Happier Than Others (and what to do if you’re not)

Why are some people inherently happier than others? Does it start at childhood where children first learned at home with their parents? More importantly, why does it seem that children are happier than most adults? If you could recall a happy time in your childhood, you’d probably think of many occasions. But as we get older and responsibility starts to set in, we push happiness to the background and let other things get in the way.

Famous Greek philosopher, Aristotle once said, “Happiness depends on ourselves,”. He asserted that happiness is a long-term goal—achieved throughout the course of a lifetime—rather than something that promises instant gratification. While this may hold more accurately for adults – based on experiences – we can also teach our children to apply this ethic to their lives; teaching them that happiness can be long term and comes from within. There’s something to be said about choosing one’s own happiness, for being happy truly is a choice. It’s not always about status or money or getting the best things. Happiness stems from the innate desire to let things go, to not dwell on things or circumstances that can drag us down.

In a 2012 article for Harvard Business Review titled “The History of Happiness”, history professor Peter N. Stearns  of George Mason University stated that while happiness seemed to have improved over the years due to incline of social and cultural status as well as improved health systems, it is a perceived form of happiness that stems from possessions of things rather than something else. And that something else is “that happiness depends on ourselves and not on our circumstances.” But throughout the recent years happiness has also seen a gradual decline and that seems to stem from “poor social support, both governmental and associational.”

Happiness is difficult to measure and can range from person to person, and even day to day. Modern studies expand on Aristotle’s work by focusing less on what happiness is and more on how happiness can be increased and sustained in our lives. According to Sonja Lyubomirsky, PhD, a psychology professor at University of California–Riverside, conducts most of her research in a relatively new field called “positive psychology”. She estimates that only 10 percent of our happiness is attributable to external circumstances like socioeconomic status, marital status, ethnicity, religious beliefs and age. This seems counterintuitive; people tend to assume circumstances play a much larger role in our happiness. But Lyubomirsky asserts there’s a wealth of evidence to support her conclusion, including a study showing that “Americans who earn more than $10 million per year are only slightly happier than nonwealthy office or blue-collar workers.”

So how do we become happier, you might ask? Is it from becoming wealthier and a rise in social status? Or is it living humbly with less possessions to worry over? In a research conducted by Professor Lyubomirsky, she found that truly happy individuals construe life events and daily situations in ways that seem to maintain their happiness, while unhappy individuals construe experiences in ways that seem to reinforce unhappiness.

If you look at the pie chart above, happiness can be mostly controlled by our own actions rather than our circumstances. And while we can’t really do much with our genetic disposition, we can do things in our daily lives to live happier. Things such as doing acts of kindness, nurturing your social relationships and learning to forgive those who have hurt you all help in the long run. These are wonderful lessons to learn for adults, but what about with children? Very young children are still learning that their actions cause consequences which may affect their lives and those around them. That is why it’s crucial for children to learn at a young age that the things they do or say can hold great impact. Children learn best by hands on experiences and every thing they experience and see is a learning lesson.

Below are some ideas you can do to be happier. While you can not always seek happiness, practice these exercises daily to help you get a better and healthier life:

  • Practice mindfulness. It is a state of being aware of the moment and who you are. Take your time to enjoy the simple things in life such as delicious food, beautiful artwork, or a great book.

  • Be in nature. Being out in nature such as mountains, parks, and oceans, help connect us to what is innate. We are all a part of nature and if we listen closely, we can hear the trees rustling, feel the gentle breeze that caresses a flower, and see the waves move symbiotically with the wind.

  • Be kind. The easiest and yet the hardest thing to do is be kind when you are facing adversity. It’s easy to be kind when things are going well but it’s even more important to remain kind when things are not. Be kind to yourself and be kind to especially those who need it.

  • Reduce screen time. In this new age where practically everyone has some kind of electronic equipment on them, learn to reduce the limit of such distractions so that you don’t become dependent on them. Keep your phone with you but don’t make it a bad habit of checking it every 3 seconds. Don’t spend all of your downtime watching videos on your tablet or laptop. And set timers for your children to limit their usage as well.

  • Be proactive. Make plans ahead of time by writing them down so you can have access to your list. When you have an idea of what you are going to do today or a week from now, you won’t feel as stressed when that time comes.

  • Eat healthy foods. Nutritious foods such as vegetables and fruits are full of important vitamins and minerals to keep your mind and body healthy. When you’re sick, your natural mental and physical states could cause more distress and stress.

  • Limit alcohol or cut out alcohol. Alcohol is a temporary fix and can only give you a temporary idea of happiness. Plus, it will drastically ruin your health and livelihood if you become dependent on it.

  • Get plenty of health-inducing exercise. Taking relaxing walks, gentle running, and any kind of health building exercises such as Taiji and Yoga will help you long term. Try to limit excessive weight lifting and anything that can tax your body.

  • Think positively! There can always be something that can get in the way of your inner happiness and peace. Remember that you are in control of your own actions and no one should dictate whether you should be happy or not.

If you have children, whether young, old, or in between, remind them of some of these practices. Children are like sponges – they soak up everything around them so show them and teach them that happiness begins within themselves and they’ll grow to appreciate the little things in life when they’re older.

Solis – Book Tour and Giveaway

SolisTourBanner-2

Gods. Goddesses. No Hope. Redemption. When the evil god-like Avas Vatras burned the world thousands of years ago and the Oracle of Delphi decreed no more magic, an amnesiac mortal, Nazafareen seeks to right the wrongs of the world. With little hope but brewing magic and wits, Nazafareen once again sets out in the nocturnal world to seek friends and allies who can help her.

Solis, the 2nd installment of The Fourth Talisman books by author Kat Ross takes us immediately after her first book, Nocturne. This book is just as wild and creative although I have to admit I enjoyed book 2 a bit more. There were more action and the descriptions were astoundingly vivid – as if I was right there with the old Gods, witches, and seers.

You don’t necessarily have to read book one to enjoy Solis, but it is highly recommended as there are parts in the second book that are better understood after reading Nocturne. Solis is sort of an adventure book mixed with mythology and fantasy but also filled with interesting insights of how the old Gods and Goddesses worked in the pantheon. The characters – major and minor all have fascinating tales of their own and the vivid descriptions of the people and places take you right into their world.

Solis is currently on a book tour with Kat Ross and Xpresso BookTours. There is also a giveaway for a signed copy of Nocturne (the first book in the series) here: http://www.rafflecopter.com/rafl/display/d04251232295/.

SYNOPSIS:

In the second volume of the Fourth Talisman series, Nazafareen’s path takes a twist, setting her on a journey into the heart of the maelstrom…

It’s been a thousand years since the Avas Vatras tried to burn the world to ashes. A thousand years since they were imprisoned in the brutal wasteland called the Kiln. But revenge is a dish best served cold—even, apparently, by the children of fire.

In Delphi, Nazafareen joins forces with the followers of Dionysius to rescue her friends from the Oracle’s dungeons and seek out the three talismans whose extraordinary powers stopped the Vatras before. With her own breaking magic growing stronger by the day, she must walk a razor’s edge to control her volatile temper. And if the Vatras find the talismans first, their last hope will die.

In the frozen wastes of the Valkirin range, Victor strikes an uneasy bargain with bitter enemies to keep his tenuous grip on the Maiden Keep. The other holdfasts are coming for him. But it’s an enemy within Val Moraine’s walls that may prove to be his downfall.

RAK Week (2/11- 2/17)- You’ve been RAK’d!

Image may contain: text

Each year, the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation (https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/) hosts a week of fun and heartwarming activities for the official Random Acts of Kindness Week. While kindness should be given freely and without prompt, sometimes people really do need a reminder to be kinder and more compassionate. Kindness starts with just one act but that single act of kindness can carry in a person’s heart and mind forever.

As a RAKtivist, I’m encouraged to do single acts of kindness during RAK week and this year I’ve decided to secretly gift the teachers at my son’s school with some sweet reminders that they are appreciated. Teachers give their hearts and souls every day to their students and it’s always a good reminder to thank them every chance we get.

So what are some great RAK ideas you ask? Here are some highlights from the RAK Foundation’s website:

* Share an uplifting story on social media

* Send an encouraging email

* Donate to a worthy charity

* Praise a local business online

* Offer to watch your neighbors’ houses while they’re on vacation

* Leave kindness notes at your workplace, school, or public restrooms

* Leave extra coins or small toys at parks for kids to find

* Smile at a child, postal carrier, and drive-thru cashier

* And most of all, be kind to yourself!

And for random kind acts for kids:

* Open the door for someone

* Pick up trash around school

* Help clean up a neighbor’s yard

* Write thank you notes to a teacher

* Let another student in front of you in the cafeteria line

* Tutor someone free of charge

* Help carry groceries for your parents

* Write encouraging notes and hide them inside library books

* And for the very ambitious kids, gather donations to give to the homeless

And remember that the best kind of random acts of kindness is when it’s done anonymously. Kindness should be given freely and without expected rewards and recognition.

Quotation: Kindness can become its own motive. We are made kind by being kind. Eric Hoffer

This year, the RAK Foundation inspires others to tell about the one person who has inspired them in life. It could be a teacher, a friend. a family member, a stranger who did a kind act, or anyone really! Check out their page of inspiration and if you represent someone, the both of you might even win a special kindness prize.

https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/rak-week

Quotation: When words are both true and kind, they can change the world Buddha

So this year, remember to do one single act of kindness each day for RAK week and maybe your kind act will inspire others to do the same. #CAPTUREKINDNESS #RAKWEEK2018

GFAF (Gluten Free and Allergen Friendly) Expo

So awhile back I discovered that eating less gluten products were actually helping me with gaining more energy. Or, in other terms, I felt less drained of energy. Gluten is basically the protein found in wheat, rye, barley, Spelt and a few other similar grains, and not in corn, rice, or oats. However, in order to truly be sure of a product being gluten-free, you’d have to buy one that has been certified gluten-free.

If you suffer from the gluten protein found in certain foods then it’s good to take a closer look at why you’re allergic to certain types of food. The tricky thing is that the gluten ingredient is found in almost all the foods that we eat, including syrup, sauces, and food binders. It’s also found in cosmetics, packaging, and household products. If you have questions about gluten-free products, talk to a health professional and find more info online such as the Celiac Disease Foundation: https://celiac.org/live-gluten-free/glutenfreediet/what-is-gluten/.

As part of the blogger program for the GF&AF Expo #GFAFExpo in San Diego, CA, I’ll be attending the expo to learn more about gluten-free and allergen friendly products. With rising health concerns all over the country, learning more about this important health issue is important for both me and my readers. If you’re in the San Diego or Southern California area and are interested in attending the GF&AF Expo this weekend, contact me through Twitter for some free passes!

The GF&AF Expo (https://gfafexpo.com/) is the biggest gluten free and allergen friendly event in the US. Whether you’re looking for specialty products that taste great or trying to learn how to cook and bake to meet your dietary needs, the Expo is the place to be.

10 Ways for Getting Your Kids to Keep Their New Year Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions are a funny thing. They only work if you actually remember them and keep at it. While many adults can try and keep their resolutions, it can be harder for kids to remember to do so or even be willing to make “resolutions”. If you ask any child what their New Year’s resolutions will be, they’ll most likely stare at you like you’ve grown a second head. But making some kind of resolution or goal is a very wise task for children. I like to call it a goal because it puts more of a positive spin to the task or tasks that you set for them.

Every person, whether young or old, should make improvements to their lives. There will always be obstacles or hindrances that enter our lives but teaching children to make goals that are reachable can benefit them in the long term. Children learn about perseverance, responsibility, and determination to complete a task. And they can learn through failure and limitations that will push them to try harder and be better.

If you have a child that hesitates to try something new or doesn’t have a lot of incentive, then have them write down 5 things that they hope to achieve in the new year. It could be anything from learning to ride a skateboard to reading 20 books by the end of the year. Set tasks that are within their age range and ability and then choose the top 2 from their list. Below I’ve included 10 ways of helping children achieve their New Year’s goals.

10 Ways for Getting Your Kids to Keep Their New Year’s Resolutions (Goals):

  1. Make a list of goals that your child would like to achieve. Set these goals within their age range and abilities. Ages 4-7 goals can be learning to ride the bike, learning to write a paragraph, or trying to eat 2 new vegetables or fruits. Ages 5-8 goals can be learning to write their names in cursive, reading 2 extra books to what they are currently reading, or starting a vegetable garden in the yard. Ages 9-12 can be learning to write a story on a topic of their own choice, learning a new sport or advancing in a current sport, or even getting straight A’s in school.
  2. Have your child write out the steps he thinks it will take to achieve the goal. Depending on the age, you might need to help him do some research. Talk it over with your child to establish if these steps are realistic and attainable within their limits and time frame.
  3. Give your child their own calendar and have them write in their goals on the calendar. Select a reasonable schedule for them to work on and eventually accomplish their goal. Have them cross off or mark the date that they completed their goal or task.
  4. Start small. Taking small steps in the beginning will help set the pace in achieving the goal. For instance, if your child wants to start a vegetable garden, take him to a garden center to get him acquainted with the type of plants and what is seasonal. Show him the different types of plants that are easier to grow for beginners and have him select a few on his own.
  5. Get literature or books on the specific goal. For instance, if it’s learning how to grow a vegetable plant, get books or print out online articles with valuable pictures on gardening and plants. Visuals will help your child establish what the garden might look like once it’s established. If your child wants to improve his basketball skills, buy books from a famous or a favorite basketball player.
  6. Encourage your child every step of the way. Sometimes your child will falter and want to stop altogether while other times he just wants to go full steam ahead! Show your child that the goal he’s trying to achieve can be attainable through dedication and hard work and that if he fails a bit then it’s a learning process. If your child wants to give up completely, remind him that he should do his very best and break through the challenges before he decides to call it quits.
  7. Reward your child’s effort but don’t overindulge on the praise. Just like you don’t want to put too much attention on a failure nor should you overdo the praise. Your child should learn that hard work in itself, is an instant reward.
  8. Find a mentor outside of the family. It could be a friend, a teacher, a coach, or a professional in that particular field of interest. Have your child meet with the mentor in the beginning if it’s possible and throughout the entire time of his goal-setting. Sometimes speaking with another person that’s not in the family can help your child see a different perspective in reaching their goal.
  9. Let your child know that it’s okay to take some breaks in between goal-achieving days. Kids can get burned out much quicker than adults and when frustration sets in, children tend to want to stop whatever they’re doing. The trick isn’t to force them to practice or study every single day but to encourage them to practice and work harder with mindfulness.
  10. Help your child share his goal achievements or progress with either a video documentary or with photos. This can also help your child look back at these documentaries should he decide to set a new goal after the current one has been achieved.
