“What’s Essential” – Contest with Nordic Naturals

It’s funny, as I’m writing this new post, I am reminded of my earlier post regarding compassion and the importance of it. It’s what I believe is “essential” to a healthy lifestyle. Why is compassion essential to living a healthier lifestyle? Well, when you show compassion and you practice it, then your life becomes less complicated and you open your heart and mind to better things and higher achievements. There is less hatred, anger, and bitterness and you are also helping someone or something achieve a higher state of being as well.

Compassion is essential in everyone’s life because it helps the world become a better place. Yes, it may sound like a beauty pageant answer, but when you really delve into the reasons behind compassion and why it’s important, you’ll understand that everyone – children and adults – need to practice it.  For me, compassion should be placed especially on those who need it – people, animals, plants, you name it. When you help an old lady carry her grocery bags to her car or help someone who has fallen, or help an injured animal to safety, you are showing those you are helping that they are not alone in their hardship. Thus, you have given them a better reason to be happier and to achieve something better.

I think one reason why I became a vegetarian was when I was a little girl, I witnessed an injustice done upon an animal. It saddened me at that time and I really couldn’t understand why anyone would hurt an innocent animal. From then on, I realized that eating animals wasn’t right – we have no right in eating an animal. I mean, what’s next – eating humans? There may be many reasons why we want to feel compassion and why we feel compelled to be compassionate. If you find your own reason, then it becomes easier to show it and to teach others as well.

Year of the Dragon

Some say that the Dragon sign is the most auspicious sign within the Chinese Zodiac. The Dragon is a mythical creature therefore it is known for it’s good fortune, strength, and cosmic abilities. January 23, 2012 marked the beginning of the Year of the Dragon on the Lunar calendar. It’s also celebrated as Chinese New Year in Asia, the US, Canada, and anywhere Asians celebrate the Chinese New Year. The Year of the Dragon Chinese New Year celebration usually lasts around 2 weeks and based on the Lunar calendar, the dates for the start of the new year is around late January to early February.

The Dragon sign according to the Chinese Zodiac sign is the 5th in cycle of the 12 cycles (or animals). The Dragon in Chinese belief is known for its power, authority, and mystical abilities. It is honored rather than slain, like you’ll find in Western tales of the past. Characteristics of the Dragon signs are: Innovative, Enterprising, Self-Assured, Brave, Passionate, Conceited, Scrutinizing, and Quick-Tempered. And the Year of the Dragon 2012 marks the Water Dragon who are usually calmer, more perceptive, and more patient than the other elements.

Chinese New Year is usually a very exciting and fun event. Dragon and Lion dances celebrate the beginning of the event by “scaring” away the evil spirits. There are also traditional Chinese dancers dressed in traditional gowns as they dance and escort the Dragon and Lions. Chinese drums, flutes, and other instruments help celebrate the events with beautiful traditional music. The Dragon and Lion dance is fun to watch as you see the Dragon weave its way throughout the crowd as it follows the sound of the Chinese Drum to eventually lead to the front of the podium and “eats” an auspicious ball as a way of thanking and blessing its people. Fireworks are played thoughout the event to scare away evil spirits as well and the color Red is adorned throughout everywhere. Red is known as a lucky color according to the Chinese traditions and people will be wearing red, having red decorations at home, and eating something red. My favorite of all, is the Red Envelope which is a traditional way of blessing good fortune upon the receiver of the Red Envelope. Inside the Red Envelope there is usually money that you will give to children and elders and sometimes young newlyweds. When you receive the Red Envelope, it is customary to kneel on the floor in front of your elders and bless them with good health and good fortune as they hand you the Red Envelop.

Chinese New Year is usually the largest celebration in China and Taiwan as preparations for the holiday begins months ahead. It is customary to clean your entire house before the start of Chinese New Year to “sweep” away any evil spirits that may be lingering and to clean out the bad and the dirty. Decorations of auspicious words and characters are hung throughout the house and some even have fireworks (if allowed) and the “Nian Gao” which is a traditional year cake made with rice flour is eaten to give the person heightened prosperity. In Chinatown and across Chinese Buddhist temples in the US, the Chinese New Year is celebrated immensely with the Dragon and Lion dances, traditional Chinese dances, music, fireworks and good cheer throughout.

If you search through your local listings, you can probably find Chinese New Year celebrations still going on throughout the week and weekend. If you missed it this year, be sure to check it out next year as the Chinese New Year celebrations are not to be missed!

Happy Year of the Dragon – may you all be blessed with good fortune, good health, and prosperity!

Lessons of Compassion – And why kids need to learn it

Compassion comes in many forms. Whether it’s saving an injured animal, helping an old lady carry her heavy grocery bags, or getting to know the new kid who’s being ignored. It can be considered acts of kindness, but compassion goes way deeper than every day kindness. It’s an innate ability to understand the other side and to not judge. It’s hard for a lot of people to feel compassion but children are the starting point to learning why it’s such an important trait.

Growing up, my mom and my grandmother were model citizens of compassionate beings. They would not only tell me about being compassionate, but they would show me in their daily acts. At first, I didn’t truly understand it – I just thought it was normal to be kind to the “weird-looking” kid at school or to help an injured butterfly away from her predators. Then again, I was a child and I didn’t know a lot about how the world worked and why. But as I grew older and wiser, I remembered the lessons of compassion that my grandmother showed me and explained in story form – after all, it was easier for a child to understand through storytelling then saying “why you have to do this, or that”. Kids are born kind and innocent and it’s that innocence that can be so magical and wonderful and yet can be completely exploited. That’s why it’s doubly important to have good influences around your children since children are basically like sponges – soaking everything up around them.

So how do you teach compassion, you may ask? First of all, you have to understand it yourself. Compassion isn’t usually rewarded or praised or even recognized. Compassion comes from within and no one should really tell you to feel it or do something compassionate – it should be learned through important life lessons. Many adults nowadays don’t even know what compassion is – since the daily stress of life can put a toll on your kindness meter. Sure they may think of Mother Teresa or the Dalai Lama as compassionate individuals and they truly are – but their compassion was innate and learned through hard lessons in life. We can all learn how to be more compassionate and more understanding. It may not be easy to do in this day and age, so that’s why it’s incredibly important to teach kids about it now.

For the most part, I became a vegetarian because of my compassion for animals. I witnessed at a very young age the abuse that was inflicted upon an innocent animal and from then on, my instincts told me not to eat animals – because I didn’t want them harmed. And back then, a vegetarian kid wasn’t necessarily the coolest thing to do. But I didn’t become a vegetarian because it was cool or uncool. I just became one because I felt the compassion for innocent animals being harmed for no particular reason.

I was reminded of an occasion when being compassionate would have been the better choice. Several years ago I had a co-worker who was overly demanding, complained constantly, and was always grouchy at work. To say the least, she was very hard to work with and she had problems communicating her needs without being rude and abrasive. When I told my mom about how my co-worker was affecting my work and life, my mom reminded me to try to find out if there were problems in my co-worker’s life and that’s why she was so difficult to work with. Well, it was either her or me, so I decided to heed my mom’s advice and tried to get to know my co-worker better (although I admit it wasn’t easy to do). As I found out, my co-worker was often ignored growing up and her parents doted on her brother all the time, thus causing her to be bitter and very unhappy as she grew up. I realized that maybe that was why my co-worker was so hard to work with and as I got to know her better, I noticed a change in attitude in her. She became nicer, more accommodating, and even smiled when she talked. I thought to myself at the time – was this a result of my being more compassionate to her and trying to understand her? Maybe. Either way, I looked at it as helping her getting out the better side of herself rather than her being stuck in her destructive shell.

We don’t always realize when a situation arises where our ability to be compassionate takes over. It could be helping a stranger stand up from a bad fall. It could be helping those in need. It could be watering a dried up plant. It could also be understanding an obnoxious co-worker. No matter what, the best ways of teaching others about compassion is to show it yourself. It may not always be easy but it will come out when necessary. I try to teach my son to be compassionate whenever possible. My mom always told me that teaching your children important life lessons are best when they are not in that situation, rather when they are calm and in a learning state. Whenever my son and I are walking around our neighborhood or at the park, sometimes we’ll see an injured bee on the ground and I’d tell my son that we should not hurt it further, rather, move the bee somewhere safe if possible. I wanted him to understand that it wouldn’t be right to further injure someone who is already hurt – rather, help them if possible. After all, it could go both ways: either he learns to help the injured bee or step on it. I’ve seen other kids older than him torture animals and I often wonder where they learned to do that. Was it instinct or learned?

Sometimes I wonder if bullies become bullies because they weren’t shown compassion or they never learned about compassion. Bullies don’t consider other people’s feelings and they project their own anger onto others. Perhaps if  they were shown some kind of compassion at a point in their lives then the turning point from good to bad would never have happened. After all, we learn from our own personal experiences and from what others show us. It saddens me when I see school-aged kids finding joy in torturing and bullying other kids their age. And then they wonder why they have no real friends – only other bullies who end up in trouble along with them.

So when is a good time to learn and teach about compassion? First of all, I believe it should start at home with the parents. If parents are good examples of not deliberately being hurtful to one another and to their children, then their children will see that form of kindness and respect. Then, parents should make it important that their children hang around other good examples – people who do not hurt others for sheer pleasure and personal gain. When we’re too selfish or want something for personal reasons, our good judgement flies out the window and feelings eventually get hurt.

Although it’s not easy to always know when to use compassion, we should always try to remember that although there are weaker beings out there, it does not mean that we must weaken them more. Instead, we should show compassion to their hindrances so that someday, hopefully, they can become better beings as well. So whether it’s an injured animal that needs our help or an old lady with her grocery bags, compassion comes in any form and can be tested upon us at any time. Being compassionate doesn’t mean we have to be softies or bend to the will of others. It simply means that we can transcend beyond what is considered good or evil and do what is cosmically moral.

Barbara’s Bakery – Products Worth Reviewing

When it comes to finding natural food that tastes great and is also great for you and something that both kids and adults will enjoy, sometimes it can be difficult to find a balance. Luckily, there are some really fantastic organic and natural companies out on the market that makes food to satisfy both the finicky palettes of children and the experienced tastes of adults. One of our favorite companies that makes natural, wholesome, and super delicious food is a company called Barbara’s Bakery.

Barbara’s Bakery makes food that are all-natural, organic, and wholesome goodness for everyone. Their products range from cereal to sweet and savory snacks. We’ve enjoyed Barbara’s Bakery for awhile now and my son really enjoys their Puffins cereal, animal crackers, and baked cheese puffs. He can polish off a whole bag of cheese puffs if we let him!

Barbara’s Bakery had kindly sent me some samples of their cereal, Snackimals, and baked cheese puffs to try and review. We seriously loved all of them and the cheese puffs were gone in no time. Between the three of us, those good-looking bags of cheese puffs were devoured shamelessly and my son still has a bag of Snackimals left that he wants to “save”.  The Snackimals are cute little animal-shaped cookies such as lions, monkeys, and panda bears. Although it’s important to look for foods that aren’t overly-processed, Barbara’s Bakery snacks contain whole grains, whole dairy, and whole fruits and they don’t use any artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

Barbara’s Bakery is named after the founder and owner who was a true visionary of her time. With the company having over 40 years of experience in making natural, wholesome, and delicious food, I’m sure there’s a product from Barbara’s Bakery that anyone of any age can enjoy. What’s great about Barbara’s Bakery is that they use only natural cane sugar where necessary, otherwise their Multigrain Cereal Bars are sweetened with fruit juices which gives them a natural sweetness. And their Baked Cheese Puffs are made with real cheese from real milk and since they’re baked, the puffs are light, airy, and slightly crunchy. You wouldn’t even know they are baked and not fried.

Barbara’s Bakery makes a great assortment of products for virtually everyone. They even make gluten-free products for those who are gluten sensitive. Barbara’s Bakery’s current lineup of products are:

CEREALS – which includes Puffins, Shredded, High Fiber, and Classic.

SWEET AND SAVORY SNACKS –  which includes Crunchy Granola Bars, Multigrain Cereal Bars, Fruit and Yogurt Bars, Fig Bars, Snackimals, and Cheese Puffs.

Barbara’s Bakery also believes in helping out the community through donations, sponsorships, and teaching about responsible eating for children. They are also major supporters of Project Puffin (since their cereals are dedicated to Puffins) through Audubon Society’s efforts to restore puffins to their former habitat of Eastern Egg Rock off the rugged coast of Maine: http://www.barbarasbakery.com/projectpuffin/. In fact, you’ll see the cute little Puffin birds as mascots on their Puffin cereal and throughout their entire product line. All of their cartons are also packaged in 100% recycled, carbon neutral paperboard and they proudly carry the EcoLogo™ on the side of the cartons.

Barbara’s Bakery is really a great choice for virtually anyone of any age. Their cereals and snacks do not contain anything artificial and they source their ingredients responsibly using non-genetically-modified ingredients. Their cereals and snacks are natural, there’s a whole variety to choose from, and best thing yet – they are absolutely delicious! So whether you’re looking for a new organic and natural brand of cereal to try or want to add some new healthier snacks to your children’s palette, be sure to give Barbara’s Bakery a try. I personally think their Snackimals are also a fun way for children to learn about the different animals and what they look like.

For more info, please visit their website: http://www.barbarasbakery.com/. Barbara’s Bakery products can be found at most natural grocery stores and certain supermarket chains as well as their online store.

BPA – Let’s Ban it in our country!

I’d like to imagine a world where we wouldn’t have to worry about dangerous toxins getting into our food and in our houses. I’d like that world where we can just pick up a can of soup or a bunch of carrots and not worry about what the can was made of or if the carrots had toxic chemicals sprayed on them. Well, as idealistic and crazy as it may sound, we actually do have the power as individuals to decide what food we want to buy. And particularly, what we can do to ensure a healthier lifestyle.

One of the specific dangers in the food we eat is eating food that has been sitting and processed in containers ladened with Bisphenol A (BPA) and Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) Phthalate (DEHP). BPA and DEHP are common chemicals and resins used in food packaging. It is also an inexpensive way of preserving plastics and you can find it used in the U.S. and around the world. The troubling thing is, the FDA, as poweful an organization as they are, have not acted on the proposal to ban BPA in food containers. And especially in food designed for infants and young children – the most vulnerable to such dangerous toxins.

BPA has been shown in scientific studies to heavily disrupt the endocrine system especially in young children as their growing bodies are susceptible to numerous kinds of attacks.  BPA greatly affects our health and has potential prolonged health adversity including diseases and disorders of the brain and reproductive, and immune system. Pregnant women and women who wish to become pregnant are also greatly affected as it can linger in the system and passed through the placenta and breastmilk.  Here is a link that provides more details on the dangerous side effects to long term exposure to BPA: http://www.consumersunion.org/pub/core_food_safety/016818.html

As a mother of a young child, I’m particularly concerned with the use of BPA in food packaging, but it is nearly impossible to avoid it. And one doesn’t really know if the packaging contains BPA unless it’s labeled as BPA-free. That’s why I advocate fresh food at all times if possible because well, fresh food is fresh and wasn’t sitting in a container for who knows how many months? In a recent study on the adverse effects of BPA and how you can counteract it, here is an article based on  the findings: http://ehp03.niehs.nih.gov/article/info:doi/10.1289/ehp.1003170http:/ehponline.org/article/info:doi/10.1289/ehp.1003170http:/ehponline.org/article/info:doi/10.1289/ehp.1003170

And an article on what BPA does and how to best avoid it here: http://www.ewg.org/bisphenol-a-info.

BPA is found mostly in plastics and food lined with BPA materials. It’s supposedly used to preserve the integrity of the plastic for longer storage life, but the longer you use a product with BPA in them, the more exposure you get. And high heat can cause leakage of the BPA material which is commonly used in plastic food containers, baby bottles, and plastic cups. And what’s ironic is that certain European countries and Canada have banned the usage of BPA in products that contain food or may be used to contain food. Why is it that such a great country such as the United States are still so far behind in certain food safety protocols? What does it take for the US to understand the difference between protecting our health and impacting our health? I think our current president and the First Lady are trying to campaign safer and better health initiatives but we as human beings, need to take our own initiative.

According to the Environmental Working Group, you can avoid certain products that contain BPA. BPA isn’t found in all containers holding food and drinks so it’s wise to check anyways. With the public becoming more aware of the dangerous side-effects of BPA, some natural food companies have stopped using BPA-lined cans and moved to a more natural way of canning and storing their food. Here are some highlights on food safety from the EWG:

Safer products and uses: When possible it is best to avoid #7 plastics, especially for children’s food. Plastics with the recycling labels #1, #2 and #4 on the bottom are safer choices and do not contain BPA. Find baby bottles in glass versions, or those made from the safer plastics including polyamine, polypropylene and polyethylene. Soft or cloudy-colored plastic does not contain BPA. Bottles used to pump and store expressed breast milk by the brand Medela are also labeled BPA-free.

Some metal water bottles are lined with a plastic coating that contains BPA. Look for stainless steel bottles that do not have a plastic liner.

We recommend avoiding use of plastic containers to heat food in microwaves. Ceramic, glass, and other microwaveable dishware are good alternatives. Avoid using old and scratched plastic bottles.

Although we don’t need to completely freak out about the food that’s kept in our plastic containers or metal containers, we should be diligent in what we purchase and from whom we purchase. I know that when I learned about BPA-lined cans in my favorite tomato sauce, I stopped using that brand immediately and looked for an alternative – such as a brand that doesn’t use BPA-lined cans or I started learning to can tomatoes myself (wasn’t a very enthusiastic endeavor). Now, I look to make sure that the containers are labeled BPA-free, however, not all companies will do that and those who do are few and far between. But there’s no need to stop eating pasta or stop feeding your babies milk. Just be careful on the amount you eat and buy BPA-free bottles. And my number one advice always – eat as much organic foods as possible so you don’t build up more toxins in your body!

Tasty Brand – Products Worth Reviewing and Giveaway

What makes something really “tasty”? Is it all-natural, sweet, and a bit fun to eat? Well, then look no further than Tasty Brand. Tasty, aptly named, is a company that makes organic, all-natural fruit snacks for kids ages 2-102 (as part of their slogan). Their organic fruit snacks are gummy snacks shaped like fruits that any kid would enjoy – strawberry, peaches, pears, rasberries, grapes, etc. In fact, my son loves taking a guess at the shape of his Tasty Brand’s gummy candy before he eats them and he usually guesses them correctly. The folks at Tasty Brand really knows how to shape their fruity snacks – they look amazingly like the real things! And not only are they fun to look at and eat, they’re also made with real fruit juice with a little bit of organic cane sugar. Depending on the variety you choose, all of their gummy snacks are shaped like real fruit and they are so moist and soft that it’s far too easy to eat one bag in one sitting! They’re not too sweet and they all contain at least 100% of Vitamin C in each serving, so your child’s getting at least some much needed Vitamin C in their diet.

Tasty Brand’s organic gummy fruit snacks are perfect for on-the-go, as part of the meal, and of course, as a unique treat for your child. As most people will say, it’s okay to snack, as long as it’s something healthy and nutritious. When we snack at home, we usually snack on something healthy and delicious! After all, it wouldn’t be fun “snacking” if it’s not tasty, right? And snacking doesn’t have to be limited to cheese and fruit. A great healthy snack can also be a bag of yummy and sweet gummy candy. With Tasty Brand’s gummy candies, you don’t have to worry about any unnecessary additives in their products. Their gummy candies do not contain anything you don’t want your kids to eat,  like high-fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.  They are also fat-free, gluten-free & made with vegans in mind, so these fruity gummy treats make ideal snacks for any time!

Tasty Brand was invented by 2 moms who wanted something yummy and nutritious to offer their kids as everyday snacks. The 2 moms, who are both professionals and engaged to the idea of trying to find a healthier alternative to kids snacks nowadays, came up with their own version of delicious and nutritious snacks. With their products containing only real fruit juices and certain “super” fruits such as Acai, Superfruit, and Pomogranate, these 2 moms really hit the mark in what is good for children as well as what children will enjoy eating. Even celebrity fans like Melissa Joan Hart, Ali Landry, and Cindy Crawford have enjoyed Tasty Brand’s products: http://tastybrand.com/api/Index.cfm/cms.page/i/767/CelebsBlog/. I always think it’s kind of fun to see what food/products celebraties enjoy with their kids.

Currently, Tasty Brand offers 2 kinds of organic snacks – Organic Fruit Snacks and Organic Cereal Bars. The Organic Fruit Snacks comes in Mixed Fruit Flavor, Superfruit Flavor, and Sport Fruit Flavor. Their Organic Cereal Bars comes in Carrot Cake and Pumpkin Pie – yummy! And since all of their products are made with organic, all-natural, wholesome ingredients, you know that you’re serving your kids something healthy and great to eat.

Tasty Brand’s organic gummy snacks are truly delicious. I don’t eat that many gummy candy and the ones I’ve tried before can not be compared to Tasty Brand’s version. Tasty Brand organic gummy snacks are soft, chewy, sweet, tart, and melt-in-your-mouth fun. It’s really hard to resist eating the entire bag. Luckily, the bags aren’t too big in portion size so it’s okay to indulge in them. And although they still do contain some sugar in them, the bags are small enough that your kids aren’t over-indulging on sugar all day.

Tasty Brand was sweet enough to send me a few boxes of their organic gummy snacks to try and review. They are also giving 1 LUCKY reader of Happymmoblogger the chance to win their very own Tasty Brand snacks! The prize will be an assortment of Tasty Brand products valued at $25.00!
