Happy Healthy and Safe Halloween

HALLOWEEN PUMPKINS STUFF

Ah, Halloween. Perhaps one of America’s favorite holidays out of all the holidays. What with candies and dressing up in practically anything you want, America’s fascination with Halloween dates back centuries and entices not only children, but adults as well.

Besides decorating the house, finding the right costume, and loading up on tons of treats, Halloween can be both fun and dangerous. It’s not always easy trying to find the right balance between letting your kids go crazy during Halloween and keeping them safe from all the crazy stuff that’s out there. But we as parents need to be extra diligent during Halloween and remember key facts in helping our kids have fun on this day while staying safe. I love Halloween and I think it’s the perfect time to scare your little kiddos because really, any other time might just seem a little cruel. After all, Halloween derived from All Hallows’ Eve an ancient tradition practiced many many years ago. While back in those days Halloween may not have been as fun as today, for the past few decades people have taken liberties with how Halloween is truly celebrated. Wearing costumes, carving pumpkins, and handing out treats still stems from its origins but now we can really go all out in how we want to dress or decorate our houses. You may even find people decorating their cars with Halloween ornaments and some go even beyond that in dressing up their pets. And then there are horror stories of people cruelly killing or harming black cats during this holiday. For others, it’s an excuse to indulge on all the sweets that you can handle.

Whether or not you celebrate this unique holiday, there are a few things to remember in keeping our kids safe. Compiled below is a list from both experts and parents and I hope we can all have a very safe and enjoyable time on Halloween.

Halloween Safety Tips:

Costumes:

You can either DIY costumes for Halloween or buy them from stores. To really help your kiddos stay healthy and create less toxins for the environment, try not to purchase flame-retardant clothing or those made with PVC. DIY costumes can be made with safer materials including paper, old bed sheets, paper bags, and anything that can easily recycled.

For younger kids, have them wear costumes that stand out from the crowd in case they do get lost in the crowd. Bright colors work well but if a certain costume doesn’t include them, place reflective tape on areas of the costume for better visability.

Don’t let your kids have harmful props with their costumes. They may just accidentally hurt themselves, or worse, others.

Treats:

Try to hand out healthier treats to kids such as all natural dried fruits, baked chips, or fun, non-toxic toys. I like giving kids Halloween themed school supplies such as pencils and erasers.

Keep in mind that with so many food sensitivities nowadays, we really have to be careful what we hand out as treats. Of course a good parent will always sort through their kid’s Halloween bags but it’s useful to keep in mind that peanuts can be a major choking and allergy ingredient.

To save money, do not buy in excess. If you buy sweet treats, the extras leftover will inadvertently end up getting eaten by your kids later on.

Decorations:

Make sure all lighting and electrical cords are UL labeled safe. Check old light decorations to make sure they are still working before hanging them up.

Try to create lighting for the trick-or-treaters that come to your home. Jack-O-Lanterns are a great decoration as well as provide better illumination on the front porch and stairs.

Try to buy hazard-free decorations. With stores readily displaying and selling Halloween decorations, it may be tempting to buy everything that you see. However, many decorations create dangerous situations for both adults, kids, and pets.

D23 – Disney Expo Event 2015

780_D23EXPO

Disney…a world as old as time, a journey as grand as the next adventure. If you’ve ever been to Disneyland or Disney World even if it was just once, there is a certain connection with this magical place that allows us to embrace our childhood, our inner mischief, and our imagination. Even if you’re not as crazy about the Disney franchise (and really, how could you not like them even a little bit?), there is just that amazing feeling that brings out the happiness we all have deep within us.

This August was my very first Disney D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center. I’m quite familiar with the Convention Center as many great events are hosted there and the D23 Expo was a sight to see when we were finally allowed to go inside. The initial waiting in line for the doors to open wasn’t the best experience as the weather was rising quickly towards 90 degrees, but once inside and the icy cool air conditioning blasted in our faces, my son and I were giddy with excitement.

We were immediately immersed into the fantastic world of Disney and its entire franchise. Not only were their flagship Mickey and the gang decorated everywhere, but my heart strings were tugged when I saw Star Wars and Marvel showcased throughout the arena. I’m so glad that Disney now owns Star Wars because with such an enormous entity backing them up, the Star Wars world can only get better. I’ll get more into details about the Star Wars exhibition there because I have to rant a bit about Marvel. As a huge Marvel fan, I was a bit disappointed with them merging with Disney because they seem to only focus on Avengers. Yes, the Avengers are a big deal to most people but Marvel encompasses so much more. Marvel in fact created their own comic book universe and has long lived through tradeouts and scrutiny. Perhaps Disney is just vetting out the superheroes and villains to be more kid-friendly, but any scenario where there are superheroes and villains, there are bound to be some bloodshed. But, I will just have to wait patiently like all the other diehard fans and see how much freedom Disney allows Marvel Studios.

D23 INSIDE

Now, with the Star Wars franchise under Disney’s belt, we saw Star Wars marketed everywhere, which was a good thing for a longtime fan such as myself and my son. But one of the main reasons in attending D23 Expo was to see a glimpse of the new Star Wars movie coming out in December and their merchandise. There was only one event for Star Wars and that was harder to get into than a pair of wet skinny jeans. And I could see why it was the most anticipated event during the expo. Many secrets were revealed to the fans as well as surprise guest stars that probably gave most of the crowd heart attacks. It was a great move for Disney to reveal so much to the world and for a fangirl such as myself, my excitement for Star Wars only grew more.

Other events such as new shows on Disney xd, Pixar showcase, and upcoming feature films were big hits as we got an inside look at all the new and exciting things happening with the animation and live action world. Throughout the weekend fans were also able to meet and greet with their favorite stars of shows such as Pretty Little Liars, Once Upon a Time, and the recently aired Descendants and take photo ops with them as well. My heart was really set on attending the Once Upon a Time event but the tickets were grabbed up within minutes. It was great for Disney to offer free Stage Passes this year to some of the events where you were guaranteed to get into one of the rooms instead of waiting for open seating. However, as with most major events such as the Disney D23 Expo, one really had to be prepared ahead of time to be able to attend all the events offered. And if you were one of the lucky fans who were able to attend the Disney Legends ceremony, that alone justified those who spent the night at the convention center to be first in line. My husband, our son, and I however were just happy to attend the event and see all the wonderful opportunities offered by Disney.

STORM TROOPERS

Now, onto the anticipated highlights that Disney will be bringing to the world. Let’s start with a major reveal that Disney is planning on building a Star Wars Land within the Disney parks in both California and Florida. The Star Wars themed land will feature rides, attractions, and immerse you fully into the world of Star Wars. That’s going to be incredibly exciting because the world of Star Wars is so immense and extraordinary that Disney could really go to extreme measures to create a theme land just for Star Wars. No word yet on when Star Wars Land will start construction but what a sight it would be to watch the progress and growth of this new area!

Disney will also be releasing several animation movies in the coming years with the most upcoming one called The Good Dinosaur. I’m already excited about this movie as the story line seems to align perfectly with Disney’s philosophy of teaching good through trials and tribulations. Other movies include bringing back fan favorites such as Pirates of the Caribbean, and several other remakes including The Jungle Book, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and Pete’s Dragon.

Disney’s D23 Expo was a pretty happening place during the month of August. It was a highly anticipated event and people of all ages got to see something new while enjoying many classics. We had so much fun checking out sneak peek previews, playing games to win prizes, and of course interacting in the Star Wars section where we were able to play with the new characters in Disney’s Infinity video games. Even the dark lord himself, Darth Vader could be seen wandering the halls testing out some new video games and being ominous and magnanimous as usual.

The next Disney D23 Expo will be in 2017 and I expect it to be even bigger and with more things to see and interact with. Here’s hoping that it comes back to Anaheim, California.

Back to School Supplements – Essential Health Guide

VITAMINS IMAGE - Copy

Vitamins and Supplements can either be a Godsend or a Hellhound. Why do I say that? Because out of the hundreds of possible vitamins out there, finding the right one(s) can be quite daunting. Add in the emphasis of eating properly, getting enough exercise, and reducing stress, knowing which vitamins and supplements your body really needs can become more of a chore rather than a necessity.

It used to be that eating the right kinds of food on a daily basis were all we needed to fortify our body and keep it healthy and strong. But that was back in the days when junk food wasn’t very prominent and produce weren’t grown with harmful chemicals and genetically engineered. Now, in the days of fast food, high stress jobs, and demanding family life, we don’t always get to eat the right foods every day. Experts agree that certain vitamins will essentially supplement what your body lacks or is depleted of. But there are also others who say that vitamins and supplements are just a “trend”. Regardless of what you believe in, you know your body best and if you can’t have those full servings of fruit, vegetables, legumes, and so forth on a daily basis, chances are your body and health is greatly affected in a not so positive way.

Below is a chart of important vitamins and supplements that are recommended for children ages 1-18 years old. Please note that this is just a guideline and if you have any questions please consult a health professional.

So whether you take a multi-vitamin or single supplements, remember to always check the dosage amount and try to take them around the same time each day. Children are more susceptible to the results of vitamins and supplements so if there are any doubts, be sure to consult a health professional. I give my son a multi-vitamin drink almost every day as he does eat a pretty balanced diet. But the one supplement I insist on giving him daily is his Omega 3’s, which is important for a growing mind and body.

Xclear – Products Worth Reviewing

XLEAR

Have you read lately that fluoride could actually be less beneficial to us than we had originally thought? There are some research that indicates this and while I believe that fluoride does help with cavity prevention, people are starting to find other healthier and less risky alternatives to oral care. I’m in no way an expert on fluoride use of course but when my son was little and couldn’t use fluoride yet due to his age, I found out about xylitol and its many benefits for both children and adults.

Xylitol (http://www.xlear.com/the-lasting-effects-of-xylitol/) is an all-natural sugar alcohol found in many fruits and vegetables and produced in small amounts by the human body. It is a safe sugar alternative for both adult and children and can be used and taken on a daily basis. But perhaps the most ingenious factor of Xylitol is its ability to solve dental health problems. Its properties prevent bacteria from flourishing in the mouth, inhibiting tooth decay and cavity growth. The taste is naturally sweet and can be used for dental care and prevention of tooth decay as well as for food.

XLEAR KIT

As a Moms Meet Ambassador and blogger, I had the wonderful opportunity to try and review Xlear, a leading manufacturer of xylitol products. I was given the Xlear Care Kit which consists of Xlear Nasal Spray, Spry Toothpaste, Bamboo toothbrush, Spry Oral Rinse, Spry Gum, and Spry Gems. The Xlear Nasal Spray can be used for both children and adults and it came in handy during the dry summer months in California. The Spry Oral Rinse has a slight minty taste, not too strong, but I can still feel the liquid permeating my gums and teeth. It was quite refreshing afterwards! Their Spry Gum and Spry Gems are perhaps our favorites though because the gum is really soft to chew and the gems are tiny and fun to eat. Although the flavor of the gum is not as long-lasting as other chewing gums, you really don’t need to chew it for a long amount of time for it to work on cleaning your teeth. I just chew it anyway to help me concentrate at times when I’m writing.

SPRY GEMS

My son loves chewing the Spry gum in the Fruit flavor (which was not included in the kit) but is available on their website and I feel better knowing that the gum does not contain added sugar, just the natural xylitol ingredient. The Spry gems was also a favorite for him as they are small enough to keep in your mouth and without having to suck on it for too long. Overall, Xlear’s Spry gums and gems are good alternatives to regular gums and mints for children and because of the added benefits of xylitol, it’s a much safer choice for your little ones.

You can find Xlear (http://www.xlear.com/) at most natural grocery stores, online at Amazon, and on Xlear’s website. For more info about the benefits of xylitol, be sure to visit their website.

Household Chores Made Easy: Safe and Economical Ideas

lemon

I can’t fathom a chore that anyone can say is their favorite. After all, a chore is a chore, and most often it is a requirement to keep our home clean and our sanity in place. My son keeps me busy and I’m always running around trying to do a million things at once. So when it comes to cleaning the house, I want something convenient and easy for me to use. But I’m also concerned with the effects of chemicals infiltrating into the air as well as the long term effects of smelling them as I’m using them.

These days you can find all sorts of cleaning products on the market. The choices can be overwhelming when it comes to finding something that is both effective and safe to use. Recently, I’ve been trying to learn more about DIY (Do-It-Yourself) products as they are more cost effective and possibly time saving. DIY household cleaning products are also a good way to make in bulk and oftentimes they are ingredients you already have on hand. The most common natural cleaning ingredients are ones you probably have seen or heard, or are using already. Those include lemon, vinegar, and baking soda. But in the world of wonderful herbs and plants, there are many other ingredients you can use to clean, disinfect, and scent your home with. Essential oils can be found at most natural grocery stores as well as online. Let’s start with the basics and go on from there.

General household ingredients:

Lemon – one of nature’s most powerful plant. It contains high concentration of Vitamin C, which has been proven to be effective in prevention of many types of bacteria and viruses. As a cleaning agent, the natural antibacterial agent can disinfect many household products. Lemon can also naturally cut through grease and grime. Tips: After using lemon in your cooking, slice up slivers of lemon peel to put in your sink disposer. Turn on your disposer and let the lemon peels do their work to disinfect, clean, and leave a fresh scent afterwards.

Vinegar – another powerhouse in disinfecting and controlling bacteria. Because of its natural acidity, vinegar can break down unwanted smells in the air as well as a great de-greaser. It’s best to use white vinegar as it’s colorless and won’t interact with the surfaces you are cleaning on. When mixed with baking soda, the concoction creates one of the most useful and non-toxic cleaning product available. Tips: Mix vinegar and water to wash and clean fruits and vegetables. With it’s antibacterial properties, vinegar can clean fruits and vegetables in a more safe and non-toxic way.

Baking Soda (Sodium bicarbonate) – a natural mineral that is broken down to be used for cooking and cleaning, baking soda has numerous uses that are safe and effective. Because it has a slight abrasive texture, baking soda is great mixed with water or vinegar to shine certain metals, household surfaces such as stove tops, counters, and dark stains. It is also effective in whitening laundry and bringing out organic stains. Tips: Do not mix baking soda with acid as it can cause a bad chemical reaction. Use lesser parts baking soda when mixed with water or vinegar. Do not add baking soda to other household cleaners.

LAVENDER

Herbs:

Lavender – one of the oldest plants in the world. Lavender has a calming and soothing fragrance that is a favorite for many uses. Typically it is the essential lavender oil that is used as a cleaning agent as the process in extracting the oil from lavender plants produces antibacterial and antiseptic qualities. Because of it’s soothing scent, many people put lavender oil in mixtures of vinegar and water to dilute the strong scent of vinegar. Tips: Gently boil lavender oil or lavender plant in water to create a calming and sweet fragrance throughout the house. When choosing lavender oil, make sure to purchase essential oils of lavender as they are the most pure forms of lavender.

Tea Tree Oil – another powerful plant with amazing healing and cleaning properties. The Tea Tree oil derives from the Tea Tree and not associated at all with the tea leaves that we drink. Tea Tree oil has many beneficial properties including antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiseptic. When mixed with other carrier oils, the Tea Tree oil creates a pleasant scent when used for cleaning. Tips: Tea Tree Oil is not safe for consumption. Keep away from children as it can cause discomfort when imbibed.

Eucalyptus Oil – eucalyptus oil may be a bit harder to find but they work wonders on disinfecting around the house. Plus the scent is rather pungent so it’s a great deterrent for certain insects in your house. Tips: Use the essential oil of eucalyptus to repel insects by dabbing some on your windowsill, along the edges of your floorboards, and in your laundry when washing old linens. It is particularly useful in getting rid of dust mites.

TEA TREE

Peppermint – another powerful herb for its antibiotic and antiseptic uses. Great for cleaning and refreshing bathrooms as the antimicrobial properties helps to get rid of germs and smells. Tips: Peppermint oil works well with other natural essential oils including lavender, lemon, and rosemary.

There are numerous ways you can use the ingredients listed above. I’ve only compiled a basic list of the most commonly used ingredients found in natural cleaning products. When mixed into a solution, it is best to use them right away and store them where you normally hide cleaning products as the sun can alter the effects of certain essential oils. And be sure to label them too so you’ll remember what they are used for. Perhaps one of the most common natural and non-toxic household cleaning solution is vinegar and water. Although vinegar will leave a sour smell after cleaning, it’s best to use either lavender or peppermint to disguise the smell and to leave a fresher and more pleasant scent.

I keep tons of baking soda in our house for its many uses. Even if you were to look online, you’d find hundreds of different uses for baking soda. I love using baking soda on my carpets as I sprinkle a good amount before vacuuming. It leaves a clean scent and my carpets feels lighter and fluffier. So whatever natural ingredient you decide to use to clean your house with, always be sure to test them out first before general use.

Happy cleaning!
