Carmex – Products worth reviewing and GIVEAWAY

Chapped lips, chapped hands, chapped elbows – basically chapped anything really isn’t a good thing. So what do you do when you have extremely dried skin and lips? You reach for your Carmex products and layer on the moisturizing happiness.

Carmex has been around for a very long time – over 70 years to be exact. Now that is a VERY long time for a company which started in the basement of the founder’s modest home. Because of the dedication of Alfred Woelbing and his family, Carmex has devoted their entire business in providing consumers with high-quality natural skin care over the decades. Today, Carmex is still being run by the Woelbing family and the original formula remains as part of the entire group of products with only a few new additions as needed. I strongly believe that companies who “keeps it in the family” are companies that will always stay true to their commitment to the public and to themselves.

Some of you may have heard of Carmex because it’s been around for so long but for those who haven’t, you’ll have much to gain when you try even one of their products. As a member of the Carmex Blog Squad, I was given the opportunity to try many of their core products ranging from their original jars to their original tubes. From their strawberry sticks to their moisture plus tints and to their newly-developed line of healing lotion and cream http://www.mycarmex.com/our-products/default.aspx. I’ve been using Carmex products since I was a teenager but I stuck with only their original tubes and had never really given their other products a try. My main usage of Carmex tubes is for chapped lips especially during the winter and summer months but I have friends who have used them for many other reasons, such as canker sores, bug bites and suprisingly as a cuticle moisturizer. And since they contain natural ingredients, you may find many other uses for their products without worrying too much about unnecessary side effects. And ofcourse one of the main reasons why I like Carmex is because they try to preserve the environment by using less plastic in their packaging and not testing their products on animals.

Carmex products are really convenient and handy to have around. They’re easy to store in your pockets or purses and they are TSA-approved so you can carry them on your airplane flights without being tackled by Homeland Security. If you like the convenience of a tube, they are actually a bit more easier to use since you just slather it on your lips instead of having to use a finger to wipe it from the jar. But the jars are great for when you want a much larger amount than what comes out of the tubes. So the preference is really up to you. Their products are not greasy and most of them contain some amount of SPF so they’re great for skiers and swimmers or just for walking around outdoors. They also make GREAT gifts for practically anyone (everyone could use an extra serving of protection and healing power!). And they’re perfect for stocking stuffers, thank you gifts for teachers, or for the hardworking mail/package delivery folks who delivers your mail through rain, sleet, and snow.

Since I’ve only tried their lips products I was eager to try their new healing lotion and healing cream. Both of the products have a very light scent as indicated on the bottles but I really couldn’t smell anything at all, which is important for those who dislike wearing heavily-scented lotions on their bodies or hands. The lotion was a bit thinner so it was easier to apply and the cream a bit thicker in consistency so a little goes a long way with the cream. Both contain specific healing ingredients to target especially dry areas and are a great size for traveling or for everyday use. Currently the healing lotion and healing cream are only available at Walgreens (in store and online) and drugstore.com. However, you can purchase other Carmex products at most drugstores, supermarkets and mass market retailers such as Target, Costco, etc.

As a Carmex Blog Squad member, I have the opporunity to offer my readers a chance to win a Carmex Skin Care Kit. One LUCKY winner will receive a prize pack consisting of a selection of goodies from Carmex! The prize consists of:

Host an Annie Chun’s Dinner Party!

I usually cook Asian food whenever possible. They’re easy to make, delicious, and wholesome. But sometimes I get a little stuck as to what to make when I’ve already done the fried rice, curry chicken, stir-fried tofu and vegetables dishes that has become our regular go-tos. Sure, fried rice is fairly easy – you just throw in a bunch of chopped veggies, eggs, and meat if you prefer, fry it together with some rice and seasonings and instant lunch or dinner! And in my house, we virtually eat rice with almost everything. Except however, my son loves noodles and prefers them over rice or anything else. So oftentimes I find myself stuck as to what to make as a noodle dish. And that’s when I turn to Annie Chun’s products.

If you’ve never tried Annie Chuns, then you’re in for a delicious surprise. Annie Chun’s makes dried noodles for making your own dishes as well as noodle soups for a quick meal at home or anywhere else. They also have products to help you make tastier Asian dishes besides the usual soy sauce and sesame oil. Their gourmet sauces include the traditional Chinese Stir-fry Sauce, Pad Thai Sauce, Kung Pao Sauce, Thai Peanut Sauce, and my favorite – Shitake Soy Ginger Sauce. Besides helpful sauces to sweeten, savor, or spice up your dishes, Annie Chun’s also makes Asian Meal Starters which are wonderful meal kits to help you make a delicious and complete meal in just minutes. Asian Meal Starters come with dried noodles and savory sauces so that you can easily make a complete meal in just a few minutes. They’re great for when you need to whip up something quick whether you’re in a hurry for dinner or having friends over for a light meal.

Annie Chun’s products are all-natural and no MSG are used. They also use recyclable packaging wherever necessary and their microwavable bowls are safe for you and for the environment.

Starting right now, you can enter for a chance to win an Asian Dinner Party kit for you and your family/friends. The dinner kit includes:

  • Annie Chun’s products to use to make the dinner
  • Special recipes and a menu suggestion for your 4 course gourmet Asian meal
  • $20 to help you with purchasing the other ingredients for the recipes
  • A special host gift from Annie Chun’s
  • A party favor for each of your guests to take home from Annie Chun’s
  • Annie Chun’s coupons for each of your guests to use to try our products

World Vegetarian Awareness Month in October

I’ve been a vegetarian for many years. I started when I was in 6th grade after I saw a dog catcher trying to catch a stray yet cute little dog and how he nearly strangled the dog in the process. I tried to help the dog by telling the dog catcher that he belonged to a neighbor. I remember the dog catcher looking at me skeptically and then decided to let the dog go. Afterwards, I ran home to tell my mom and I gave the dog a bowl of water and some dog food. For some strange reason, the connection with the dog catcher and the dog being so ill-treated led me to become a vegetarian. I remembered my mom just happened to be serving hot dogs for lunch that same day and I respectfully declined them not wanting to eat any “dogs”. From then on, I told my mom  that I no longer wanted to eat meat. My mom, who has a gentle soul, understood my reasonings but being a mom, was also concerned that I wouldn’t get enough protein or iron.

I stayed a vegetarian for many years after that but because my mom wanted me to be sure I got the proper amount of nutrition in my growing body, tried to encourage me to go back to eating meat. I think she was just  thinking of it more from a mother’s point of view and worried that her child wasn’t getting the proper nutrition. I was also a picky eater so that didn’t help the cause. So, I went to eating absolutely no meat to eating chicken only.

And then a few years after that, I realized that eating chicken only deviated from my original motivation in becoming a vegetarian so I decided to stop eating chicken and returned to being a vegetarian. I recalled some of my peers thinking I was strange because vegetarianism back then wasn’t a popular choice nor did people truly understand the reasons to being a vegetarian.

Well, nowadays more and more people are becoming more aware of the personal and social responsibilities in not eating meat and it’s no longer being held “strange” for not wanting to eat a cow, chicken, pig, or seafood. Their are many negative health ramifications to eating too much meat as well as the destructive impact it has on animals and the planet.

Please feel free to take a more in depth look at the reasons to becoming a vegetarian. Click on the link below for more information from the sponsors of World Vegetarian Day and you can enter to win up to $1000 for taking the pledge!

Go Veggies!

Amy’s Kitchen – Products worth reviewing

I’ve been a vegetarian for many years and besides the humane aspect of not wanting to eat animals, I also became a vegetarian for health reasons. It also helped that I’ve always enjoyed eating fruits and vegetables and I grew up with a family that is health conscious. But even vegetarians can have limited choices when it comes to variety, especially if you’re dining out or at other people’s homes. Fresh produce are always included in my meals and I supplement my protein with soy (tofu and such). So whenever I find a company that makes really great vegetarian frozen foods, I am eager to try them and will most likely stick with them.

Amy’s Kitchen really caught my attention a few years ago when I stumbled upon them at a local supermarket. I thought to myself – these products are all vegetarian meals and they’re at a mass supermarket! I just had to give them a try. There were so many choices to select from and when I looked in detail, they even made food for vegans and people with certain food allergies (such as gluten and wheat and dairy/lactose). What a wonderful assortment of dishes to choose from – I had thought. From then on, I was hooked and I purchased Amy’s frozen meals quite regularly, especially when I didn’t have time to cook a vegetarian dish for myself or I was in a hurry.

All of Amy’s meals are made with organic ingredients and they are wholesome and satisfying. If you don’t think vegetables can make you full, then you’ll have to give Amy’s meals a try. But their meals are more than just vegetables thrown together – they incorporate real homemade recipes and use only the finest organic flour, rice, cheese, vegetables, legumes, etc. to make them truly nutritious and fulfilling.  To me, they taste like comfort food; when you want something homemade but just don’t have the time to make it.    I try not to eat conventionally-made food too often, but with a young child in the house, it’s always nice to get a bit of wholesome and naturally-prepared frozen food as a go to when I need it. And I wasn’t really satisfied with other frozen foods out on the market nor do they use organic and all-natural ingredients. So Amy’s Kitchen was a great fit for what I needed as a convenient and quick meal.

Amy’s Kitchen was kind enough to send me some free product coupons to try out some of their new products. Although my favorites are the Veggie Loaf Whole Meal, burritos, and Vegetable Lasagna, I’ve never tried their desserts so I decided to try their chocolate cake. Their chocolate cakes are Vegan, so no animal by-products are used. At first I was skeptical at the taste because how can cake made without butter or eggs be good? Well, I was indeed proven wrong because the chocolate cake was extremely moist and dense. It tasted just as good as cake made with butter and eggs. Perhaps it’s the real and natural ingredients used instead of “flavored” ingredients – even real organic cocoa is used! However, the portion is a bit small but since I’m a big chocolate cake fanatic, any portion less than the size of my hand is considered “small”. The chocolate flavor was intense but not bitter or dry and the cake had such a delicate moistness to it that I wanted to pop the whole thing in my mouth.

So whether you’re a vegetarian or not and you just want something healthy, natural, and delicious, then give Amy’s a try. They make everything you could make on your own, except the convenience of just popping it in the microwave or heating it on the stove top. The company is family owned and operated and they dedicate their entire business to provide consumers with wholesome, natural, and superior frozen food. They do not use any Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) or preservatives and their cartons are made  from unbleached boards without any poly coating on the inside and only clay coating on the outside. Their plastic wrapping does not contain plasticizers which may leak into foods so it’s safe to heat in the microwave oven. Overall, Amy’s products are a great choice for your health and for the environment as well.

Amy’s products include pizza, beans and chili, kids meals, soups, pasta sauces, and so much more. You can find their products at most supermarkets and natural food stores. They have such a varied assortment of products to choose from, you can never go hungry! For more information about Amy’s Kitchen, please visit their website: www.amys.com.

Newman’s Own Organics – Products worth reviewing

Who would’ve thought that Nell Newman, the daughter of famous screen legend, philanthropist, and race car enthusiast Paul Newman would end up developing her own line of organic products? Established in 1993, it started out as a branch from Newman’s Own (the company which her father built) and later became an independant company in 2001. The company’s slogan is, “great tasting products that happen to be organic” – how modest is that saying as it perfectly complements the company’s humble background as well.

I was fortunate enough to try out many of their core products ranging from their soy crisps to “Newman-O’s” to chocolate (and boy were those chocolates mouth-watering!). All of their products are made with certified organic ingredients and carries the USDA Organic label. Their coffee are fair trade organic coffee and their chocolates are also Rainforest Alliance certified. They do everything possible to help consumers have more choices in organic food – from their original pretzels to olive oil and basamic vinegar to mints. They even have a new organic pet food line specially formulated for cats and dogs – the same quality ingredients and care goes into the production of their pet food.  But the most prominant aspect of this expansive organic company is their charitable spirit. Under the philanthropic guidelines of Paul Newman, profits from Newman’s Own Organics has been generously added to the Newman’s Own Foundation – an organization that donates money to educational and charitable organizations.

Newman’s Own Organics (www.newmansownorganics.com) isn’t just a company dedicated in giving consumers high-quality organic food; they’re also a company with a lot of heart. However that did not distract me from doing an honest review of their organic snacks. So here is a detailed list of what I received and tasted:

Barbeque Soy Crisps – these soy crisps are made with Organic Low Fat Soy Flour and Organic Rice Flour and has a nice delicate barbeque flavor with a hint of spice. It’s not too spicy and not very salty and it has a great crunch to it.  If  you’ve never tried soy crisps or any kind of chips made from soy and rice, then you have to give these bbq soy crisps a try. Soy has a distinct flavor but since I grew up eating soy products, it had a very satisfying flavor and since it’s baked, it doesn’t leave you with greasy fingers. They are also gluten-free.

Traditional Thin Pretzels– I love pretzels. They are great snacks to enjoy with basically anything. They are a healthier alternative to chips (although there are healthy chips out there) and they are easier to carry around in your hand.  Newman’s Own Organic pretzels are made with organic unbleached wheat flour and organic rye flour and has a nice crunch to it. Since they are “thin”, it’s hard not to eat more than a handful.

Alphabet Cookies in Arrowroot – these are not your regular alphabet cookies that you find at your kids school; they’re perfect for both kids and adults. Now some of you may not have heard of Arrowroot or what it tastes like, but it doesn’t have a very strong flavor and it’s usually used in place of wheat in a regular recipe. But in this instance, arrowroot is used as a flavor enhancer and can add texture to any product. The alphabet cookies were delicate and also fun to eat!

Champion Cookies with Chocolate Chips – the story behind these Champion Cookies is really endearing. You’ll have to read the bag to find out the whole story but I’ll give you a brief description. Champion Cookies got their name a long time ago from grandma who entered the cookie sling race. When she didn’t take the gold due to her “secret” additive of chocolate chips in the cookies, she then took her cookies to a neighboring cookie contest and won first prize because of the chocolates.  The Champion Cookies are a bit bigger than your regular bite-sized cookies and they pack an immense amount of flavor. And since they are not too sweet you don’t feel that sugary overdose even after a few cookies.

Fig Newmans (Fat Free) –  I love it when companies use cute names for their products and Fig Newman’s are not only memorable in taste, but you can’t help but chuckle at the cleverness of the name. I don’t usually buy fat free food food since I try to limit my fat intake as it as, but you really can’t tell that these Fig Newmans are “fat free”. Fig Newmans are made with organic unbleached wheat flour, organic sugar, and organic figs and they are soft in texture like the fig newtons and once again not overly sweet.

Cinnamon Mints –  I used to enjoy mints when I was in college because it helped me study better ( I think the peppermint helped me concentrate better) but I don’t believe I’ve ever tried cinnamon-flavored mints before so I was quite pleasantly surprised at Newman’s Own Organics mints. It has a uniquely fresh flavor and with a strong hint of cinnamon so you can taste it immediately. Their mints come in a handy reusable tin and four roll packs. Flavors include Cinnamon, Ginger, Peppermint, and Wintergreen.

Dark Chocolate Bar – I humbly admit that I am a chocolate snob. My preferences in chocolate run with the extravagant and any old chocolate bar usually doesn’t satisfy. And when it comes to organic chocolate and chocolate that contains more than 50% of cocoa beans, that’s all the better! Newman’s Own Organics chocolates uses the finest ingredients possible because chocolate in essence, is one of the most richest form of food on earth so really great chocolate requires exceptional cocoa beans. I tasted the 54% Dark Chocolate Bar and let the flavor savor in my mouth and the aftertaste of rich cocoa beans ignited my taste buds. I can definitely tell that real cocoa beans were used instead of artificial flavoring. They also use 100% organic ingredients in the Dark Chocolate bar. These chocolates are also made from cocoa beans grown on Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms. The Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal guarantees that the cocoa in their Signature Series were grown on farms that meet comprehensive standards for sustainable farming, protecting soil, waterways and wildlife habitat as well as the rights and welfare of workers, their families and communities.

Prunes – What ingredient(s) are found in Newman’s Own Organics Dried Prunes? – simply, well, prunes. Some companies add sugar or sulfites to their dried prunes, but in reality, dried prunes like most dried fruit has a very long shelf life and already has nature’s own built in sweetener so sugar really isn’t necessary. I really enjoy prunes as an occassional snack so I definitely had to try Newman’s Own Organics Prunes. They were moist and dense and had just a bit of sweetness to them without being overpowering. Going forward, I’m going to try making cookies with NOO’s dried prunes in them.

Newman-O’s in Chocolate – Who doesn’t like a good creme-filled cookie? They’re great as a stand alone snack or dessert or you can eat the whole bag as a meal (although I don’t recommend doing that). Newman – O’s are simply rich cream filling nestled between two crunchy cookies. The chocolate variety was rich and satisfying with the chocolate cookies yielding a not-too-sweet flavor and the cream center moist and creamy.

Hermits Ginger Soft Cookies – I used to enjoy ginger cookies because I love the taste of ginger and it also holds great health benefits. But then I ate too much of them and stopped for awhile. So when I opened the package of Newman’s Own Organics Ginger Soft Cookies, the aroma instantly reminded me of why I loved ginger cookies so much. They’re made with organic unbleached wheat  flour and adds a bit of organic raisins to give it a slight edge over other ginger cookies. And because they’re soft and chewy, these were a great option for me when I wanted a softer cookie on occassion.

Licorice in Pomegranate – I have to admit I’m not much of a licorice fan and outside of eating “Red Vines” at the theater some time ago, I don’t know much about licorice. But when I took a bite of NOO’s Pomegranate the first word out of my mouth was “YUM”! The texture was soft and chewy but not rubbery (like Red Vines) and it had a slight hint of pomegranate flavor. It wasn’t too sweet (which was nice) and it smelled delicious! You didn’t think licorice could smell pretty good, did you? The main ingredients are Organic Wheat Flour, Organic Sugar, Corn Syrup, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Vegetable Glycerin, Sunflower Oil, Elderberry Extract, Citric Acid, Natural Flavor, Pomegranate Juice Concentrate, and Licorice Root Extract. All natural flavors and it still tastes better than any licorice twists with artificial flavoring. Beat that, Red Vines!

Newman’s Own Organics became an organic only food company because they realized the concerns of  their customers and wanted their customers to know exactly what goes into their products. Their ingredients come from certified organic farms without the use of artificial fertilizers or pesticides and most of the recipes were passed down from previous generations. The company makes every stride possible in ensuring that the ingredients used in their products come from environmentally-conscious farms and organizations. They also prohibit the use of preservatives in their products. Their devotion in providing high-quality products not only goes into their products but is noticeable in their packaging as well. All of their packages bear the distinctive image of American Gothic “Pa” Newman and daughter Nell with exception of  their chocolates and tea.

To find out more about Newman’s Own Organics, please visit their website: http://www.newmansownorganics.com/. They also offer coupons and recipes that are hard to pass on. You can find Newman’s Own Organics in most health food stores and mass market supermarkets.

I honestly enjoyed trying all of these delicious products from Newman’s Own Organics. The cookies were not overly sweet, the chocolates were luscious, and the chips were delicate and flavorful. But try it out for yourselves and you’ll taste the difference between conventional food to organic food made with high-quality, ingredients.
