Counting 1-2-3

I think most parents have used the innocent threat, “I’m going to count to three if you don’t (insert command).”  I know that I’ve used it plenty of times on occassions that deemed it necessary. But does it really work? Hmm, I’m not too sure. I’ve seen other parents use it on their children and their kids just looked at them skeptically and continued doing what they were reprimanded not to do. It’s frustrating when your kids don’t do what they’re supposed to do, like putting away their toys after playing with them, eating all the food on their plate, not running around and damaging everything, and so forth. I’m sure you’ve had times when you’ve counted up to 100 and they still didn’t care. Kids are constantly testing their boundaries and they really don’t know when enough is enough. So what’s a parent to do? When gentle persuasion doesn’t work, bribery, and the old reverse psychology trick flies over their heads, what other way is there for your child to do what they’re told? Military? Okay, that may be a bit rough and that’s why I’ve come to realize that the innocent threat of couting up to three may work, sometimes, at least.

As my son gets older he is constantly testing his boundaries with us. But I look at it as his intelligence is also growing. After all, your mind is thinking up a lot of ways to do things that you shouldn’t be doing just to see if you can get away with it. Fortunately, this activity is okay for children since it’s one of the ways for them to learn and grow – it’s not okay for adults to do it though. But how do you authoritatively teach your children boundaries without acting like a dictator? After all, you still want your kids to listen to you and respect you when they realize they did something wrong. Like my friends have told me – keep a tight rein on your kids when they’re young and they should grow up okay. I firmly believe in that philosophy since there are so many outside influences nowadays such as other children, television, video games, toys, and anything else that can swipe away all the hard work you’ve been doing to keep your kids in line.

There really are no right way or wrong ways to teach your kids to be good. Sometimes it’s inherent, sometimes it’s learned. As I’m sure all parents agree that all kids are different and they eventually learn at their own level. However, discipline starts at a very young age and I’m one who believes that nurture usually wins over nature. And the possibility that boys are harder to raise when they’re young but easier as they get older and girls are easier to raise when they’re young and harder when they’re older. Or at least that’s what people keep telling me. I have nieces and nephews and as I’ve watched them grow up, I think that theory is pretty true. But there’s always hope for those that wonder if their sons will ever grow out of the immaturity stage or if their daughters will stay away from the bad boys as mentioned here. If you keep a close eye on your kids and create a balance between discipline and chaos, then surely your kids will grow to be responsible, kind, and generous people. Or at least we hope so, right?

And with the holidays coming up, it’s doubly important for kids to learn about good manners and good behavior when they’re at home or visiting relatives and friends. After all, I figure if I’m going to be counting 1-2-3 or even to 100, then at least my son is learning his numbers.

Carmex Moisturizers – Products Worth Reviewing and Giveaway

With the cold winter months coming up, it’s no wonder that we’ll need extra moisturizers to soothe our dry hands. I think we can all agree that dry skin is not a happy endeavor. So what can you do, you may ask? Well, you can lather up in rich, healthy moisturizers that can protect, soothe, and heal your skin. I use moisturizers every day but when the weather is dry, I use extra moisturizers to combat that pesky cold weather. One of the best moisturizers around is made by a company called Carmex. Carmex makes great products that soothe and heal your skin as well lip care products that both protects and enhances your natural beauty.

Carmex has been in the skin moisturizing business for over 70 years which started with their  signature lip balm. Eventually, the family-owned business   expanded their line to include moisturizers, creams, and tinted lip balms, all of which include healthy and healing ingredients like aloe vera, Vitamin E, and menthol. Carmex products has been used by supermodels, actresses, sport professionals, and anyone else who wants a product that does its job without harming the body. I’ve particularly enjoyed using their lip balms for many years and not too long ago I started using their healing moisturizers. Carmex has two specific moisturizers that target the needs of your skin. One of them is the Healing Lotion which includes Aloe and Vitamin E as their main ingredients for every day use and their other lotion is the Healing Cream which contains nine essential healing ingredients that’s intended for extremely dry skin and deep moisturization.

As an official Carmex Blog Squad blogger, I was sent samples of both their Healing Lotion and Healing Cream to try and review. When it comes to healing extremely dry and troubled skin, Carmex has come up with a formula in both their Healing Cream and Healing Lotion – hence the names. The Healing Cream is a super concentrated formula that can target specific areas on your body that needs moisturizing. The fragrance is light with both lotions and they absorb quickly so there’s no sticky or greasy residue. Carmex’s Healing Cream and Healing Lotion comes in both larger sizes in 4 oz. and 5.5 oz., respectively, and smaller travel sizes in .75 oz and 1 oz., respectively. The travel sizes would be great for traveling or for use in your office, school, or gym. I’m constantly toting around hand lotions in my purse so the smaller sizes are really handy.

Carmex is also excited to share their Healing Lotion and Healing Cream to 1 LUCKY reader of Happymomblogger. The winner will receive a kit just like I did (see photo) which includes the Healing Lotion and Healing Cream in full size tubes and travel size tubes. So how do you win this fabulous prize? A Compassionate Thanksgiving

Since I’m a vegetarian, I don’t eat turkey or ham for Thanksgiving. Or any day for that matter. So often, people ask me what I eat during the Thanksgiving holiday and I can easily tell you that there are many choices out there when it comes to food for vegetarians during Thanksgiving. Besides the usual sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, green beans, smorgasbord of pies, and stuffing, even a vegetarian can get “stuffed”. But if you really want to be part of the Thanksgiving celebration without the carnivores staring accusingly at you, then there are other meat-alternative options out there. You can find anything from soy to tempeh to wheat, but my favorite for the past few years have been a “turkey” from Tofurky.

Tofurky is a leading manufacturer of soy based, meatless meals that can be enjoyed by vegetarians or non-vegetarians. My son loves their deli sliced veggie meats because they are so incredibly flavorful and satisfying. I myself have enjoyed Tofurky for many years and I buy their products regularly. They sell everything from deli sliced veggie meat to veggie sausages to veggie pizzas, and every season, they make their specialty, Tofurky Feast. The Tofurky Feast is a meatless substitute for the traditional turkey or ham you’d eat during Thanksgiving and personally, I think it tastes a whole lot better. And it’s more humane, of course. You don’t have to sacrifice a poor, innocent turkey during the Thanksgiving holiday. Tofurky’s Tofurky Feast is like a complete meal – it includes a stuffed Tofurky roll, gravy, Tofurky jurky wishstix, and an organic chocolate cake from Amy’s Kitchen (yum!). You really can’t go wrong with this meatless turkey feast.

I think I’ve bought the Tofurky Feast for the past few years not because there are no other choices out there, but because it genuinely tastes great. The soy turkey is moist and juicy and along with the gravy, it goes great with the soy turkey or with your homemade mashed potatoes and stuffing. And they recently added Amy’s Kitchen’s chocolate cake to literally, put icing on the cake. In my previous reviews, I reviewed Amy’s chocolate cake and if you had a chance to try it, then you know how delicious the chocolate cake is. And the Tofurky Feast isn’t really that expensive compared to a real turkey. Depending on where you live and what store you go to, you can find the Tofurky Feast anywhere from $9.99 on up. They’re sold in practically every natural grocery store available and right now on Facebook, you can enter for a chance to win a Tofurky Feast of your own: http://www.facebook.com/tofurkyfan.

Tofurky is proudly owned by Turtle Island Foods, Inc. and they use only organic and all-natural products that are GMO-free, preservative-free, and contains no artificial ingredients. Their products are absolutely delicious and the varieties are sure to delight anyone who wishes to try the vegetarian route. Of course being a vegetarian isn’t all about eating veggies and fruit. It’s also about being humane, eating the right balance of foods that are filling and nutritious, and enjoying the good health that it brings.

Currently, on Tofurky’s website, you can send a Thanksgiving e-card that’s absolutely adorable: http://www.tofurky.com/ecard. It’s a fun and thoughtful way of sending someone a vegetarian Thanksgiving card and the best part is that Tofurky will donate $5 to Farm Sanctuary for every turkey adopted  through Farm Sanctuary’s  Adopt-A-Turkey  program using the link at the end of the card.

So this Thanksgiving, think about going a different route with your traditional turkey or ham. After all, Thanksgiving isn’t all about eating that piece of turkey or sliced ham. It’s about giving thanks to what you have and being appreciative. And most importantly, it’s about giving – and you can give this Thanksgiving by not eating a turkey – you can give them life.

Weleda, the power of nature – Products Worth Reviewing

What is it about the scent of fresh rosebuds or the invigorating feel of soft petals touching your cheeks? There’s something magical in the power of nature and when you combine nature with science, something unique happens – you get, Weleda. Weleda is a leading manufacturer of skincare products using ingredients completely derived from nature. With Weleda, they believe in the powerful effects of what natural ingredients can achieve, and you can see the wondrous results for yourself. When I was searching for a new skincare line to try, I knew I wanted something that was safe for my skin and didn’t contain ingredients that would eventually harm the planet.

After an extensive search, I came upon Weleda. I knew they made great baby care products since I’ve been using them on my son since he was born, but I knew little about their adult skincare line. So I delved a bit more into their adult skincare line and was surprised and happy to know that they apply the same philosophy to their adult skincare products as to their babycare products. They take great care in providing natural, organic, and pure ingredients that help target specific needs of the skin. I found out that they actually have several skincare products to choose from and several specific lines that work specifically with the areas that you need help in. For instance, they have products for sensitive skin, for youthful skin, for first signs of aging skin, for aging skin, and for extremely dry skin. Each specific line of products uses specialized ingredients chosen for their protective and enhancing powers so you don’t have to guess which product will work for you. Since Weleda had already sent me their babycare products to try and review, I was super delighted when they sent me some of their adult skincare products to try as well. I was already interested in learning more about their products and started using their adult skincare products right away.

The products that Weleda sent me to try were the Wild Rose Smoothing Day Cream and Smoothing Eye Cream and Almond Soothing Facial Oil. The Wild Rose skincare line combats the first signs of aging by using organic rosehip seed oil which naturally contains powerful antioxidants Vitamins A and E as well as unsaturated fatty acids. As Weleda describes their organic rosehip seed oil, ” because this remarkable oil works in harmony with your skin, it helps stimulate its natural healthy functions and soften fines lines – all to counter first signs of aging. Your skin can hold on to its elasticity and vitality longer.” With such powerful words as that, I was eager to try their new skincare products and since their ingredients were ingredients that I recognized, I knew it was okay to give them a try.

With Weleda’s Wild Rose Smoothing Day Cream, I used it exclusively instead of my other face cream so that I can see the results. Upon initial application, my skin felt smoother and softer and the dry areas on my face were softer and definitely well-moisturized. The cream itself comes out rather easily and it went on smoothly and without a greasy feeling as you would expect most creams to feel. Because of the colder weather upon us, I was really surprised to see and feel the difference between my old facial cream and Weleda’s Wild Rose Smoothing Day Cream. The Wild Rose Smoothing Day Cream also seemed to have evened out my skin tone and created an overall balance between dry and oily areas. The Wild Rose Smoothing Eye Cream did the same to the areas around my eyes. Although I can’t say that my eyes look 20 years younger, I do feel the areas around my eyes tighter and they don’t look as tired. Both the Smoothing Day Cream and Smoothing Eye Cream were easy to apply and the cream absorbed quickly and pleasantly – and the scent is gentle and not overwhelming. You can definitely smell the roses but it’s not overpowering which is a major plus for me.

With Weleda’s Almond Soothing Facial Oil, their almond oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and Vitamin E. As a component for their Almond Soothing Cleansing Lotion and Facial Cream, I only tried their Soothing Facial Oil which I used after I washed my face. The soothing oil is meant to calm and nourish the delicate skin while gently restoring your skin’s natural balance. The Almond Soothing Facial Oil is pure and simple in its ingredients, but because almond is such a powerhouse in the antioxidant area, there really is no need to include a bunch of unnecessary ingredients. It only contains organic sweet almond oil, plum seed oil, and blackthorn flower extract. And that’s really one of the main reasons why I like Weleda so much. They’ve done years and years of extensive research on the powers of natural ingredients and what naturally-derived ingredients can do to nurture, purify, and enhance your body’s own healthy capabilities. At Weleda, they believe that our own natural capacity to be healthy can only be enhanced with natural ingredients in our lives.

Weleda currently makes a great assortment of products for both adults and children. Their products feature familiar ingredients such as pomegranate, rosemary, roses, almond, witch hazel, calendula, chamomile, sesame seed oil, and so forth. If you’re interested in trying products that are made with natural ingredients instead of synthetic, then you should really look into Weleda’s products. For more info about Weleda, please visit their website: http://usa.weleda.com/. You can find Weleda’s natural products at most natural grocery stores and certain Target stores and I’ve also seen them on Amazon.

Kashi TLC Granola Bar – Products Worth Reviewing

Granola Bars are like socks. Socks keep your feet warm and from harm as so do granola bars. Why? Because properly nutritioned granola bars keep your body from harm – when you eat a healthy granola bar, it feeds your body and your mind.

Kashi makes an assortment of delicious and healthy granola bars that are appropriate for kids and adults. As a leading brand of natural and organic food products, it’s easy to see why Kashi has really made a great name of themselves in the food industry. You probably even have a few of Kashi’s products in your pantry right now. They make everything from granola bars to cereal to pasta and in our home, we’ve enjoyed many of their products on a regular basis. We always have one of their organic cereals in our pantry or my son and I will have one of their frozen meals for lunch. And Kashi has introduced some new products to their fans recently. One of them is their new TLC Granola Bar in Peanutty Dark Chocolate – and it sure is chocolatey!

As a member of Moms Meet, I was given the opportunity to try and review the Kashi TLC Granola Bar in Peanutty Dark Chocolate.  They kindly offered me samples of Kashi’s new TLC Granola Bar in Peanutty Dark Chocolate to try and I absolutely loved them! We had a party with my son and his cousins and it passed the kids test for sure. As one of his cousins said, “Mmm, this doesn’t taste yucky!”. I’m assuming he meant that he’s had some yucky-tasting granola bars before. The result was, that the kids wanted more and their parents were happy to read the ingredients didn’t contain any refined sugars, artificial flavors or colors, or preservatives. And the best part yet- you can really taste and see the layers. That’s why it’s called “Peanutty Dark Chocolate Layered Granola Bars”, because you can taste the layers of rolled oats and grains, smooth chocolate, and crunchy roasted peanuts. It’s a perfect blend for those who enjoy both chocolate and peanut. It’s not overly sweet and it’s slightly chewy and crunchy at the same time.

Kashi’s Peanutty Dark Chocolate Layered Granola Bars contain 7 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein in each serving so it does pretty well in satisfying the hunger area. I usually eat one for breakfast with my hot tea and it’s quite filling. Then I again I don’t eat a heavy breakfast, so it’s really up to you on how many bars you think will satisfy you. With all of the grains and Kashi’s signature 7 Whole Grains and Sesame included, their Dark Chocolate Layered Granola Bar really packs a punch.

Kashi has been making wholesome, natural, and organic food for over 25 years. Their food caters to people of all ages and genders and even the picky eaters too! Kashi currently makes ready-to-eat cereal in both organic and non-organic versions, hot cereal, snack bars, crackers (we love their crackers!), frozen entrees, frozen pizzas, cookies, pilaf, and waffles. Their food can be enjoyed at home, at the office, or even at parties. For more info about Kashi and their products, please visit their website: http://www.kashi.com/.

Rice Select/Mambo Sprouts – Products Worth Reviewing and Giveaway

There’s nothing like a hot bowl of fresh, steaming, moist rice to have for lunch or dinner. Or even breakfast. Rice can be enjoyed any time of the day because it’s healthy, filling, and so versatile. One particular type of rice that we’ve come to enjoy in our household is Jasmine rice. Jasmine rice is slightly fragrant, slightly sweet, and slightly moist. Because Jasmine rice is made using the essence of the Jasmine flower, the rice itself takes on the flavor and aroma of the Jasmine flowers. If you know the intoxicating scent of Jasmine, you’ll most likely enjoy Jasmine rice too. If not, don’t worry – you’re not really biting into a mouthful of flowers. There are several kinds of Jasmine rice and each country makes various versions of their own. One company who makes a unique type of Jasmine rice is called, Jasmati, made by a famous rice company called, Rice Select. Rice Select makes an assortment of traditional rice as well as uniquely flavored and blended rice.

Without a doubt, rice, either white or brown, has quickly become a household favorite throughout the world. Although it is known to have originated in Asia, many other counties eat rice as either a main dish or as a side dish. In Asia, rice is usually eaten steamed or as a porridge. In Southern America rice is enjoyed as a side dish usually flavored with something else. And in the US, because of its diversity of people, rice can be enjoyed virtually in any way – whether it be steamed, fried, or flavored. When I discovered a rice company that makes exceptional, delicious, and natural rice grown in the US, I’m happy to support them. Rice Select has become a favorite brand in our household because they make an assortment of organic and naturally-grown rice right here in the United States. Rice Select also supports sustainable agriculture by developing high yielding rice varieties that require less pesticides, fungicides and water resources as well as organic foods by developing new organic products. Rice Select’s production facilities operate pollution free and use only minimal processes to mill and package nutritious, high quality, all natural food products. Rice Select’s PET jars are also re-usable and recyclable and BPA- free.

Rice Select is a company based in Texas and they have been in the rice-growing business for over 30 years, which started with their famous Texmati Rice. Texmati Rice is basically a combination of basmati rice and traditional American long grain rice. The result is rice that’s a bit fragrant, chewier, and fluffier. Rice Select makes both non-organic and organic versions of their Texmati rice which also comes in brown rice. I’ve tried their organic Texmati rice in both white and brown and I have to say, that their brown Texmati rice is incredibly delicious and unlike other traditional brown rice. It’s a bit nuttier in texture and flavor but it’s also slightly fluffier than other traditional brown rice. My son also enjoys brown rice and I’m so glad since brown rice is a bit more nutritious.

Rice Select is a leading maker of rice in the United States. But they don’t produce just rice – they also make whole wheat couscous, Texmati with red rice and beans, Texmati with red rice and lentil, Texmati with brown and wild rice, pearl couscous, orzo, Texmati Mushroom Medley, Texmati Vegetable Medley, and Risotto. So I’m sure you’ll find something that will fit your exquisite palatte. All of their rice are grown in the United States and they are completely natural without any added colorings or preservatives. Their products are also non-genetically modified and kosher and they support many programs and charities. One charity which they are currently running a promotion on is the Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness. During the months of September, October, and November, you will find their specially-marked boxes of Texmati rice sporting the prominent pink label and lids in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. They plan on donating up to $50,000 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure fund and they hope you will lend support by purchasing their special Pink Texmati Rice.

Through a unique partnership between Mambo Sprouts and Rice Select, I received a jar of Rice Select’s Jasmati Rice which I was super delighted! I have been eager to try their unique Jasmati Rice and it was a wonderful experience. With Jasmati Rice, I was able to cook it as regular steamed rice and with leftovers, I usually make it into fried rice. Fried rice is super easy. Here’s a basic recipe:

Ingredients:

3 cups cooked Jasmati Rice, 2 tablespoons canola oil, 1/4 chopped green onions (or scallions), 3 eggs (beatened and seasoned with a dash of salt and ground pepper), 1/2 cup of frozen or fresh vegetables (you may use any vegetable to your liking, but mostly chopped organic carrots, peas, and onions will work fine), 1 teaspoon organic soy sauce, 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper, 1 teaspoon sesame oil (use pure sesame oil for best flavor).

Instructions:

Add canola oil to a heated frying pan or wok. Add beatened eggs and stir until fully cooked and fluffly. Add frozen vegetables and cook vegetables through. Add cooked Jasmati rice and stirfry together. Add soysauce (you can add more according to taste), ground pepper, and sesame oil. Stir fry until well-blended. Add green onions last and stir fry for a minute. Enjoy!

You can also add any kind of meat if you prefer or tofu. Tofu works great if you saute it first to get that crunchy and nutty flavor.

As a special giveaway through Mambo Sprouts, they are kindly offering 1 LUCKY reader of Happymomblogger a chance to win a Jasmati prize pack. The prize will be a jar of Jasmati rice and a Rice Select tote bag. Mambo Sprouts is a company dedicated to helping individuals learn more about the benefits of organic and natural foods and products.
