Basketball. A universal game of sweat, tears, cheers, winners and losers. One of the oldest game known in history, basketball is as important to the sports industry as NASCAR is to car racing. It’s a sport that can be played on a sunny afternoon in the front yard to a pickup competition between neighborhood friends. But perhaps one of the most enjoyable ways of basketball is watching NBA players duke it out on the court. Sweat. Tears. Cheers. Winners, losers, and anything in between. This is the life of basketball, and the life of an NBA player.
Our story begins with Nathaniel Clifton, aka “Sweetwater”, a nickname that grew on him for his love of sweet drinks, and his love for his mom. As a child, Sweetwater Clifton left home with his dad for “something bigger in life”. He eventually started playing basketball in school and later joined the legendary international basketball team, The Harlem Globetrotters. The movie takes us back and forth between his love of basketball and his devotion to the Globetrotters, to eventually earning his place with the New York Knicks (known as Knickerbockers at the time).
What I enjoyed about the film, Sweetwater were the flashbacks and the highlights of the Globetrotters. The film showcased the incredible skills of the Harlem Globetrotters athletic and comical tricks while in the game with other NBA teams such as The Los Angeles Lakers (previously known as the Minneapolis Lakers). As a young talent, Sweetwater was given an incredible opportunity to play with an all-white NBA team, The New York Knicks due to his gentle disposition and profound athletic skills. While we do see the disparity and unfairness of race separation, particularly with the NBA franchise, the film loosely glosses over it.
Sweetwater hosts an all star cast including Jeremy Piven, Kevin Pollack, Cary Elwes, Richard Dreyfuss, and of course the main lead, Everett Osborne. For me, Everett is a charming actor with a gorgeous smile and athletic build.
